GoGA Mission

We strive to create a positive, dynamic, supportive, all-female environment where women are challenged to ride harder and farther. We emphasize a holistic approach towards riding: we want to facilitate your progression towards becoming a confident rider in terms of route, repair, and safety knowledge.

The specifications:

- Ride 20 to 30 miles in 2007, 25 to 35 miles in 2008

- Quick pace (we don't want to be out all night)

- You will feel most comfortable riding a road bike

- Although we always look out for each other, you are responsible for knowing your own limitations. If you are not comfortable with long distance, the mechanics of your bike, or the pace is too quick, speak up!!! We will try to accommodate you if you are willing to push yourself.

Tuesday, September 23rd: Eastside GoGA

Damn you, Cinefamily... I have to go to this:

Delicious Vinyl presents: L.A. Old-Skool, 1982-1989
Get ready to "set it off" Strafe-style with some rare footage from the Delicious Vinyl Vaults, giving you a tour of early hip-hop in Los Angeles. You'll catch ultra-rare footage of Ramellzee and graffiti artist Jean Michel Basquiat at the Rhythm Lounge on Melrose--a rare pocket in the advent of L.A. hip hop culture. Also, Soul Brother "Legendary" will present highlights from 1982-1989 (from the Freak Beat to the Golden Era), from his upcoming Suns of James Brown documentary, which features footage of Uncle Jam's Army, Jam City, Ultrawave, and underground dance crews including early moves from members of The Pharcyde. Next, Delicious Vinyl artists (Tone Loc, Young MC, Def Jef, and Body And Soul) appear in a 1988 Electronic Press Kit made for the label by director Tamra Davis. Plus music videos, a live dance performance by the Soul Brothers, DJ set by KDAY Grand Mixer M-Walk, and some other very special guests! To top it all off, Peanut Butter Wolf will be in the house to VJ a set of visuals to cap off the night.

It starts at 8pm, which means I won't be able to lead GoGA this night, but if anyone wants to join me buy a ticket and we can ride out the Silent Movie Theater. I need to hear from you, or else I'm rolling solo to the theater.

Please feel free to meet at 8:30pm at Scoops and if I can I will post a route for the normal GoGA ride.

Happy Tuesday!

East Side GoGA: Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Ladies of Los Angeles,

My sincerest apologies for having fallen off the past month (or so). I've extremely pleased that the Westside GoGA is still up and running, and I heard rumors that the Eastside GoGA was still meeting as well.

Well, ladies - I'm back, albeit in terrible shape, but I'm back and I was want to kick off a new year of GoGA right - with drinks! No ride tonight, just a little bit of the electric relaxation.

Join me and familiar faces at Pure Luck on Tuesday - same GoGA time - for a brainstorming session that will include all of the following:

- creation of new routes
- food
- exploration of new themes
- BEER

Hope to see you there.

Westside GOGA: Tuesday August 19th

I'm posting the following for Nancy:

This is the route I'm proposing for tomorrow: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2183761

It's about 33 miles, so we need to leave Bikerowave at 8:30 sharp and we'll be doing a good clip (think fast for GOGA). This is definitely going to be road bike/fixie...hybrids and mountain bikes aren't going to be happy. If someone wants to do more climbing than this, we can opt to do Olympic instead of Venice as our East bound street.

Can someone please being a fold up pump? Mine's not arriving for another week. I'll bring a wrench.

July 8, Westside GOGA

Oooops! Sorry guys, I posted the ride on Midnight Ridazz but forgot to post it here.

We will be riding tonight.

The Westside gals have decided to keep the Westside ride relaxed for now to encourage newcomers.

It will generally be about 20-25 miles at a quick pace that is fast enough to challenge, but relaxed enough not to discourage newbies.

So come out and join us for a ride! Don't be shy!

Sunday, June 29, 2008

We'll be meeting leaving from Scoops at 8:30pm for a short ride out to All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock. We could squeeze some food and drink in there - any suggestions?

A NEW YEAR OF GIRL ON GIRL ACTION

Yes, it's been about a year since the conception of GoGA, and in the beginnings of this second year, we are doing some re-vamping of the GoGA structure.

This year we will see:

The departure of Signe, beginning a new job in the Bay Area up north (an SF chapter of GoGA?)
The return of Katie and Mia (I'm calling you out!)
Hopefully, the return of Dana (Currently still in Europe? We miss you!)

While these girls have been the backbone to GoGA in the past year, there's been plenty of new and returning faces. Our charge to you is to keep coming and be vocal - where do you want to go? What do you want to see? And really, how fast can we get there??

Given the ever fluid attendance of GoGA, we've decide to make GoGA a bi-weekly event.

Starting June 3rd, GoGA will commence every other week. I agree that this will take some getting used to, so I will remind everyone via posting on this blog and midnightridazz.com for the next month or so. ALSO, we will stick true to alternating the weeks between a SHORTER ride and a LONGER ride. Again, I will be sending out reminders via blog and other places.

Also in the new year, I'd like to invite Westside GoGA girls to step up, if there's interest, to begin a Westside GoGA ride during the alternating weeks of the Eastside GoGA ride. Thus, beginning June 10th, I'd like to see if we can't get a bi-weekly Westside GoGA ride started. Please contact me if you are interested in being the coordinator. It's mega-easy and I will give you a lot of support, including showing up...

Very small, but strong group of girls taking down Griffith Observatory. Many thanks go out the the bright moon that made Griffith Park a little less scary, the rock that turned out to be a big toad that entertained us for a while, coyotes that took the day off, and last, but definitely not least, Park Ranger Bleeker for giving us the royal GoGA treatment.

Tuesday, April 1st: APRIL FOOLS RIDE

For one night and one night only, the Gods have smiled down upon Tuesday... In a 6-pronged attack of high prankster, gender-bending intensity, (1) this Tuesday fell on April Fools Day, (2) Roadblock was the only guy to EVER ride with GoGA, (3) the fine ass GoGA girls pulled prank #1 by showing up with delightful mustaches, (4) the GoGA girls were upstaged when ToTA (prank #2) stepped on the scene - yes, Tranny on Tranny Action! - thanks to Tren Way BG for representing hardcore with flowers in your hair and some daisy duke dresses, (5) OLDBLOCK in the house representing a future Roadblock surrounded by the lovely ToTA ladies, and (6) mystery prank #3 involving Ritchie and a camera... to be discovered at his will.

The usual GoGA morphed into ToGA (Tranny on Girl Action), GoTA (Girl on Tranny Action), or TWaT (Three Way Tuesday) for the first leg of the ride, rolling through West Hollywood. After the "Ladiezz" were dropped of at the bar, the real GoGA girls plus Roadblock hit the streets for some cold hard sweat. The night ended with a reunion at Pure Luck and drinks - as every good ride should.

Thanks to the new girls that rode tonight, hopefully you will come back!, the fine ass ladiezz of ToTA (Tranny Way BG) for riding in some holla-worthy gear, Oldblock -the ghost of Christmas future, and of course, ROADBLOCK!

More pictures are located at Stevo4's page, Tattiya's Flickr, and Midnight Ridazz.

Original posting:

One time special - Guy&GA:

Calling all ladies - this is your warning - if you don't come out for GoGA any other time, you should come out for this:

Come bear witness to the ONLY GUY to ride with GoGA EVER!! Hell, Roadblock paid a pretty penny at LACBC's Big Bike Love, so ladiezz, we have to show him what we got. Route TBD, but be want a BIG turnout, so it'll probably be short, sweet, and somewhere in the realm of fast. Spectators are welcome, but once we roll out - Roadblock is the only one for us!

Tuesday, March 11th: Bridges of LA County

IAAL*MAF's 10 bridges of LA ride, plus a couple more where we can find them.

It'll be a shorter ride, ideal for first time GoGA riders to check out the pace, distance, etc. Please note the "new" new meeting time (8:00pm, ride out at 8:30pm SHARP).

The Route

Rider down (but not out): Katie Bennett

Last week on GoGA, (3/4), Katie Bennett suffered a bike injury that's diagnosis has yet to be determined, but nevertheless she's down for a while. This accident lead us to reconsider out "new" starting time - while traffic was not the sole cause, it was a contributor to this unfortunate event. So once, again, we are changing our starting time to meeting at 8:00pm, and leaving at 8:30pm SHARP.

Thank you for bearing with us, and we hope to see you out there.

February 25th: Carter G. Woodson and the Origins of Multiculturalism

From the Founders of Black History Month.

"From its inception, America has been a landscape peopled by diverse ethnic and racial groups, and today virtually all peoples are represented. If America has always been racially and ethnically diverse, the nation's self-image has not always recognized its multicultural history. Until the last decades of the twentieth century, America has seen itself largely as the flowering of Anglo-Saxon culture and prided itself on allowing immigrants to adopt the American way.

During the early years of the twentieth century, a small number of intellectuals began to question whether America was simply a transplant of English civilization. W. E. B. Du Bois, Theodore Herzel, and Randolph Bourne believed that modern America should embrace the cultural differences that newcomers brought with them to America. Democracy, they believed, required tolerance of difference and could sustain those differences in harmony.

Among those intellectuals of the Progressive era, Carter G. Woodson did most to forge an intellectual movement to educate Americans about cultural diversity and democracy. For the sake of African Americans and all Americans, Woodson heralded the contributions of African Americans and the black tradition. In 1915, he established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and by the time of his death in 1950, he had laid the foundation for a rethinking of American identity.

The multiculturalism of our times is built on the intellectual and institutional labors of Woodson and the association he established. He should be known not simply as the Father of Black History, but as pioneer of multiculturalism as well."

Let's ride. Don't forget the new meeting time 7:30

Tuesday, January 15th: The Citrus Ride

...it's a long one.

Introduced and hosted by Katie B!

This ride was inspired by my love of citrus and a project called “Fallen Fruit: A mapping of food resources in Los Angeles”. We are in the peak fruiting season for So Cal’s formerly ubiquitous citrus trees; so let’s take advantage and harvest the crop by bike. I will be scouting all week, and encourage you to do the same. Please take note of the address of fruiting trees you notice around town this week. Anything that hangs over public property; sidewalk, alley or street is ours for the taking. And don’t you worry about our impact; we are going to hit a bunch of spots so we won’t leave denuded trees in our wake. Bring your bags for this one!

Saturday, January 5, 2008

Tues Jan 8th: The New Year ride

Out with the old and in with the new. Forget 2007, let's ring in 2008 by riding to places that will come to life in this new year. This is really Katie's domain, but we can check out new developments, new restaurants, bars.. anything undergoing major rejuvenation. Ideas?

Meet at 8.30pm at Melrose and Heliotrope. This will be a quick ride followed by a bite at Pure Luck, and a chat about the rides we want to do this year.
